7 Loan Origination Software for Mortgage Brokers Compared

Loan origination software for mortgage brokers

In wholesale lending, it’s often the lender, not the broker, who controls the appraisal process or dictates which valuation provider is used on a given file. Yet independent mortgage brokers still need a loan origination system (LOS) that gets a file from application to closing.

Your mortgage origination software should also be built for how you actually work, from shopping rates across multiple wholesale lenders to ordering accurate valuations and appraisals to providing a smooth borrower experience through a branded point-of-sale (POS), all while staying nimble and without the overhead of an enterprise IT department.

As part of the broker ecosystem, Class Valuation works to make the valuation/appraisal piece of the loan origination process easier. We’re already approved by many of the wholesale lenders and financial institutions that brokers work with, and behind our broker team are dozens of dedicated account managers rather than a general support queue.

That said, we’ve compiled a list of top loan origination software platforms to help you compare them. The platforms below are listed in alphabetical order. Class Valuation does not have a preferred LOS, and being included here is not an endorsement.

Some of these systems were purpose-built for the broker channel. Others are broader mortgage-lending platforms used across retail, wholesale, consumer, and correspondent lending, yet also serving brokers through a dedicated broker or third-party originator (TPO) portal. We’ve noted which is which below, along with what each platform says publicly about appraisal and valuation workflows. One caveat worth flagging up front: Don’t assume every platform supports broker-controlled appraisal ordering.

ARIVE

ARIVE is a digital origination platform purpose-built for independent mortgage brokers. The ARIVE platform combines an LOS, a borrower-facing POS, a product and pricing engine (PPE), and what it calls an “industry-first” lender marketplace into a single platform, so brokers aren’t logging into four different systems to move one loan forward.

Brokers can issue instant pre-approvals, run one-click audit underwriting (AUS), generate fee worksheets with real fees, and submit loans digitally through its lender marketplace. Additionally, all status updates are trackable inside ARIVE rather than checking each lender’s portal separately.

When it was originally launched, this platform was available only to members of the Association of Independent Mortgage Experts (AIME). While ARIVE continues to partner closely with AIME and offers special extended trials or promotions for their members, the platform is independently owned and open to all licensed mortgage brokers, non-delegated correspondents, and processors with a valid NMLS identifier.

With more than 25,000 independent mortgage brokers subscribed, ARIVE processes 200,000 new loan applications and 900,000 pricing calls each month, according to its website. ARIVE also ships new features on a roughly biweekly cadence based on user feedback, which is worth knowing if a fast-moving product roadmap matters to you.

BytePro

BytePro, commonly referred to as Byte, is an enterprise-class LOS from Byte Software®. It is built on a highly configurable architecture that lets lending organizations tailor workflows to their own processes rather than adapting to the software’s defaults. It includes progressive fee automation and “compliance lights,” a visual system that flags policy issues as a loan moves through the pipeline.

Byte supports multiple origination channels, including wholesale, through its web portal, which gives TPO customers what Byte describes as everything loan officers need to upload applications, pull credit, run AUS, facilitate loan locks, and manage documents

Byte’s web portal is offered as both a cloud-hosted and self-hosted platform, which is less common among the systems in this roundup and can matter for mortgage lenders with specific data-hosting requirements. Byte is also now available as ByteWeb, a browser-based software that offers the same features but with a redesigned user interface.

If configurability and control are important to you, Byte is worth considering.

Point

Point by Calyx bills itself as “the industry’s leading LOS for mortgage brokers.” It’s been around for more than 25 years, long enough to build one of the deeper vendor networks in this list, with over 200 integration partners spanning credit reporting, appraisal services, asset verification, pricing, eligibility, and closing documents. That makes it one of the few products on this list marketed as a complete broker toolkit, from initial application through closing, rather than leaving POS to a separate vendor.

For POS, users can add on ZIP, which offers a customizable borrower interview, personalized borrower URLs, and e-signature. It is priced per application and per signature, rather than as a flat platform fee. Because Point’s appraisal ordering runs through its broader vendor network rather than one built-in tool, brokers generally have some flexibility in which valuation providers they connect to through the platform.

Empower® Loan Origination Solution

Empower® from Dark Matter Technologies is an enterprise-grade platform built around exception-based workflows. So rather than moving every loan through the same fixed milestones, Empower provides automation decisioning by dynamically recalculating tasks and conditions as loan data changes and then routing only the files that actually need a human’s attention. Powered by Aiva Intelligence, the platform classifies documents, calculates income, and monitors compliance from POS to closing.

Empower supports retail, wholesale, correspondent, and direct lending as native channels, and its POS layer covers borrowers, brokers, and loan officers on a single underlying data model, so information is entered only once. For brokers working with a wholesale mortgage lender on Empower, a dedicated broker portal connects TPOs into that same workflow.

TPO Connect®

TPO Connect®, the Encompass® broker portal by ICE Mortgage TechnologyTM, isn’t a broker LOS like ARIVE or Point. Brokers don’t typically buy or administer Encompass themselves. Instead, TPO Connect is the portal wholesale and correspondent lenders use to give their broker and TPO partners access to loan submission and pipeline management, branded to the lender rather than the broker.

Through TPO Connect, brokers can view pipeline reports, order credit and AUS, submit lock requests, and deliver and e-sign loan packages within a workflow the wholesale lender configures and controls. Because the lender owns the configuration, appraisal ordering through TPO Connect generally follows the process and uses the valuation providers the lender has already set up, rather than allowing the broker to make an independent choice. Even so, brokers who work with several wholesale lenders in Encompass may find the user experience more consistent across lenders than on platforms where each TPO portal is built and configured independently.

LendingPad

LendingPad is a well-established, cloud-based LOS with a dedicated Broker Edition. The Broker Edition pairs a simplified, multi-user interface with real-time notifications, built-in POS functionality, and direct connections to wholesale lenders, allowing a broker’s team to work on a file without leaving the platform to manage separate borrower- and/or lender-facing tools.

LendingPad’s integration list includes wholesale mortgage lenders such as UWM and Mortgage Depot, as well as service and data providers such as DocMagic®, CotalityTM (formerly known as CoreLogic), and MeridianLink®. LendingPad users typically order appraisals through that vendor network, using whichever AMC or valuation provider is connected to a given loan rather than through a native appraisal-ordering module built into the LOS.

MeridianLink® Mortgage

MeridianLink® Mortgage is a cloud-native, fully browser-based LOS built for banks, credit unions, and independent mortgage bankers. It offers configurable workflow automation and an open API that MeridianLink says connects to hundreds of vendor partners. It supports retail, wholesale, and correspondent lending, and its native PPE, PriceMyLoan®, handles underwriting, pricing, and closing costs in a single platform.

For brokers, the relevant piece is the TPO Portal. MeridianLink says it simplifies submissions, accelerates loans from application to close, and keeps data exchange between broker and lender in sync. As with other multi-channel platforms on this list, the wholesale mortgage lender largely determines how appraisal ordering is handled based on how that lender has configured the TPO relationship in MeridianLink.

The bottom line on mortgage broker loan origination software

No single platform on this list is the right LOS for every broker. The right fit often comes down to factors outside the software itself, such as a broker’s volume, staffing, and the wholesale mortgage lenders that make up most of their business.

A shop that wants POS, PPE, and a lender marketplace bundled into one purpose-built system will look at ARIVE, Point, or LendingPad differently than a broker whose volume runs mostly through one or two wholesale lenders on Encompass, Empower, or MeridianLink. For many brokers, the answer is some combination of both: a primary LOS for pipeline management plus whatever TPO portal each wholesale lender requires for loans placed with them.

Wherever a broker’s loans end up, Class Valuation works to make the appraisal piece of loan processing straightforward. We’re integrated with several of the platforms above, already approved by many of the wholesale lenders brokers work with, and built to support brokers directly rather than only through a lender relationship. That support includes fast appraiser assignment and turnaround times, dedicated account managers who know a broker’s business rather than a rotating support queue, and custom solutions when a broker’s workflow doesn’t fit a standard template.
